While 1000Hz polling rates used to be the gold standard, many of us have recently upgraded to extreme performance mice boasting 4000Hz or even 8000Hz reporting frequencies. On paper, these numbers offer near-zero latency, giving you a massive response time advantage in competitive titles like Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, and Apex Legends.

However, when you plug in your brand-new high-end mouse and jump into a match with high expectations, you might encounter an unexpected and frustrating surprise: Micro-stutters, sudden FPS drops, and brief freezes every single time you flick your mouse quickly.

The Technical Reality: CPU Bottlenecking

When you run your gaming mouse at a standard 1000Hz, it sends its hardware position data to your PC 1000 times per second. Your modern operating system and processor handle this background workload effortlessly.

But when you push that setting to 8000Hz, your mouse knocks on your CPU's door exactly 8,000 times every single second. If you have background apps running—like Discord, multiple browser tabs, or streaming software—and your processor (even a highly capable gaming chip like the Ryzen 5 5600) is already fully utilized by the game’s core engine loop, this massive influx of input data can instantly spike your CPU threads to 100% capacity.

The result? The game engine gets delayed in delivering frames to your graphics card (GPU) because it is too busy processing your intense mouse coordinates. What you see on your screen is sudden frame drops and jarring stutters.

Step-by-Step Fixes

If you are suffering from this issue, you don't have to completely give up on your high-performance hardware. Apply these steps in order to eliminate the lag permanently:

1. Enable "Raw Input Buffer" In-Game

Modern competitive shooters, most notably Valorant, feature an explicitly designed setting called "Raw Input Buffer."

  • Turn this setting ON.

  • This bypasses the standard Windows operating system layers, handing the mouse's high-frequency raw data packets directly to the game engine. This heavily reduces the sudden workload spikes on your processor.
